Transponder, Remote Head, or Smart Key: Identify Your Car Key Before You Call
Almost every car key falls into one of five families: plain metal, transponder, remote head, laser-cut, or the push-to-start smart key. One look at the blade, the buttons, and the dash tells you which one is yours. Name it on the phone and the quote you hear is for your exact key — settled before anyone rolls.
Look at three things and you can name almost any car key: the blade, the buttons, and the dash. A car that starts with a button instead of a turned key uses a smart key. A metal blade with a groove milled down the middle of its face is laser-cut; notches along the edges mean a standard edge-cut blade. Buttons molded into the key’s plastic head make it a remote head key, while buttons on a separate remote mean a key plus a fob — two pieces, not one.
The reason the name matters is practical. Every key we make starts from a blank — the uncut key, chosen to match your vehicle — and most keys also need a programmer, the diagnostic tool that introduces the new key to the car’s electronics. Three things to look at before you dial
You do not need any vocabulary to start — the vocabulary is what this post supplies. Pick the key up and check three places:
- The blade. Notches cut along the edges, like a house key, mean edge-cut. A thicker blade with a channel snaking down the center of its face means laser-cut. No blade at all points to a smart key.
- The buttons. Lock and unlock buttons built into the plastic head of the key itself mean a remote head key. Buttons on a separate plastic remote hanging next to a plain key mean a key-and-fob pair. No buttons anywhere usually means an older mechanical key or a transponder key — the kind with a chip hidden in its plastic head, covered below.
- The dash. If the engine starts from a button while the key stays in your pocket, you have a proximity smart key, whatever the thing on your ring looks like. This one answer outranks the other two.
Put those three observations together and the combinations map to a name — the five families plus two common variations, the key-and-fob pair and the flip key:

Plain metal keys & the chip you cannot see
The basic edge-cut key is plain metal with no electronics — common on older vehicles, farm trucks, and fleet equipment. It is the simplest key we cut, and identification is easy because there is nothing hidden about it.
The transponder key is where looks deceive. AAA dates the transponder to the mid-1990s: a key carrying a microchip with an encoded identification number. When the ignition is turned, the vehicle “electronically probes the key for its ID number.” The engine immobilizer — the anti-theft computer standing between the key and the starter — refuses to run for a chip it does not recognize. The chip hides where you cannot see it; GEICO describes the type simply as a key with “a plastic head embedded with a computer chip.” A transponder key and a plain key can look like twins on the ring, and only one of them will start the car after copying.
This is the single most common identification miss we hear on the phone: “it is just a regular key.” The model year settles it better than the eye. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports immobilizers were standard equipment on 62 percent of new models from manufacturers other than Hyundai and Kia by model year 2000, and on 96 percent by model year 2015. Unless your vehicle is older than roughly the turn of the century, assume the chip is there and let the year, make, and model do the identifying.
Remote head keys & keys with a separate fob
Remote head key is the trade term you will hear from us, and it means exactly what it says: the remote lives in the head of the key. Lock and unlock buttons are molded into the same plastic that hides the transponder chip, so one part cuts, starts, and locks the car. If your key has buttons but the car still starts by turning it in the ignition, this is almost certainly what you own.
Other cars split the jobs: a key plus a separate fob, the fob being the small battery-powered remote that rides on the ring next to the key and does nothing but lock, unlock, and perhaps open the trunk. That distinction sounds fussy until the replacement is on the table: a remote head key is one part doing three jobs, while a key-and-fob pair is two parts replaced separately. Laser-cut & flip keys
Hold the blade up and look at its face. If the cuts wind down the center of a noticeably thicker blade — rather than biting into the edges — you are holding a laser-cut key, also called a sidewinder. What matters on our end is the machine. Laser-cut blades come off different cutting equipment than edge-cut blades — equipment not every shop carries, though our truck does. We cut and program sidewinder keys routinely, and the callers who mention the groove hear a quote that already fits the job.
One clarification worth making, because articles on this subject regularly blur it: laser-cut is a statement about the blade, not the electronics. Nearly every laser-cut key also carries a transponder chip, so it is both things at once — a laser-cut transponder key. The cut decides the machine; the chip decides the programming.
The flip key — GEICO calls it a switchblade key — is “a spring-loaded key that folds into” its own fob and pops out at the press of a release. A flip key is not a separate species either. Press the release and look at the blade underneath — it will be edge-cut or laser-cut, and that is the detail to pass along.
The smart key & the blade hiding inside it
The proximity smart key is the one type you identify by the car rather than the key. AAA traces smart key systems to the early 2000s, when automakers began using radio communication across multiple antennae to detect the fob near or inside the vehicle. The fob stays in a pocket or purse, the door unlocks at a touch, and the engine starts from a button on the dash. If that describes your mornings, say “push-to-start” first on the phone — it outranks everything else about the key.
There is a trap inside this type, and it catches honest callers constantly. Consumer Reports notes that owners of push-button-start cars may not realize a mechanical emergency key hides inside the fob, “typically accessed by pushing a button on the key fob and pulling the key out.” The small blade is there for unlocking a door when a battery dies. People find that little blade and describe their key to us as an ordinary metal key, which points at the wrong blank and the wrong equipment entirely. If a small bare blade with no head is what you are looking at, check whether it slides out of a fob before you call.

No key to look at? Describe the car instead
If the key is lost, the identification does not stop — it just moves to the vehicle. One memory does most of the work: did the engine start with a key turned in the ignition, or a button pressed on the dash?
